Lingerie as outerwear is not a new trend. Madonna was rocking it in the ‘80s. Slip dresses were all the rage in the ‘90s. (Yes, we’re still drooling over Jennifer Anniston’s iconic bod in all those slip dresses in every season of Friends.) And who could forget Selina’s and Gwen Stefani’s bedazzled bra tops?
Lingerie as outerwear is not a new trend. Madonna was rocking it in the ‘80s. Slip dresses were all the rage in the ‘90s. (Yes, we’re still drooling over Jennifer Anniston’s iconic bod in all those slip dresses in every season of Friends.) And who could forget Selina’s and Gwen Stefani’s bedazzled bra tops?
It’s an easy trend to do and an easy trend to understand, a simple peek of a lace bra or corset demurely exposed under a blazer or blouse is all you really need to master this sexy look.
Ultimately, here’s what we’re screaming: It’s a shame to reserve all those beautiful pieces of lingerie for the bedroom!
If you’re not utilizing lingerie in your wardrobe and keeping it hidden away in a drawer, we’re here to open up your world with these fashion possibilities! While you’re werking it in the bedroom, lingerie can actually be working for you out of the bedroom!
Lingerie offers fun textures, colors and prints that all add interest and elevate any look!
Here, let us show you…
Fish and fence nets stockings under jeans. Snag a pair of Kix'ies for a Knee high look!
Bra, corset, or bodysuit paired with jeans or skirts. Add a blazer to take it to another level!
Slip dress with heels (date night) slip dress with sneakers and/or denim jacket (cute day look)
Intentional bra showing (The matriarchs of our family might have always told us it was “tacky” to show our bra straps, but taking a cute bralette and wearing it with a top that shows the beautiful lace detailing is a fun and flirty way to add color and texture!)
Key tips from The Lingerie Addict
- Visualize the type of silhouette you want to create. Will it be flowy, androgynous, vampy, sporty? Is there a shape you have in mind? Focus on it.
- Pick a key item, a piece that you absolutely have to have as part of your outfit. Every other element chosen should complement it.
- Start layering!
- To make sure your lingerie as outerwear outfit works, treat it like any other outfit. Accessories are everything! Try harness-type accessories and body jewelry to add another dimension and personalize your look.
- Have fun with fabrics. You want to use different types of textiles; play with texture and opacity. I generally like keeping my core area opaque and fitted. Something see-through is my outer layer to complete my look without hiding what’s under. I go for mesh, tulle, fishnet, and of course, open and fine knits.
- Understand what makes you feel comfortable in your outfits in general and apply those concepts to your underpinnings.
The evolution of this trend proves that it's okay to wear whatever you want, so long as you wear it with confidence and feel great doing it!
It’s okay to say, “That’s not for me!” You know what you like and what you feel most comfortable in and that’s confidence! But if you’ve seen others rock lingerie as outerwear look and thought to yourself, “I wish I could do that!”
